Spring 2024

Dear esteemed ANMDA Members, and our email subscribers,
As we have just said goodbye to winter and hello to spring, in this letter, I am excited to share some of our milestone achievements as an organisation & make you aware about upcoming events. Since I wrote to you in my last letter, we have conducted various webinars & statewide meetings. We were astounded with the record level of participation and engagements in those activities. ANMDA members have unrestricted access to all sorts of educational materials including those of recent webinar videos if you missed live events. You can now log into your personal portal by clicking here Login – ANMDA. I encourage members to participate in these invaluable learning opportunities. Talking about the website – we listened to the feedback from all our subscribers that our website had some technical issues e.g. in registering for membership / events. We recently launched a totally transformed ANMDA website ANMDA with a complete fresh look & added ease of access to member’s section. Please have a look at our website and share your constructive feedback for its growth.

Finally, I would like to invite all members as well as non-members affiliated with ANDMA to join us in our Annual Conference, in Melbourne on the 16th of next month. Like last year, this conference will take place both in-person and virtually, allowing for greater participation. We have great speakers covering very useful topics relevant to our medical practice providing you quality CME hours followed on by networking event where we can’t wait to watch lively performance from the renowned Nepalese entertainment group “Brishtie and the band”.

I encourage everyone to mark their calendars for what promises to be a thought-provoking event – AGM2024, an annual networking event for all Nepalese doctors residing across Australasia. Let’s bring a culture of making this annual event a regular thing among every Nepalese doctor residing in Australasia so that at least once in a year we get a chance to meet up in person and “connect” in real sense. I am actively thinking of making AGM events as a full weekend package from next year so that we get ample opportunity for networking and connecting with each other. Out of 52 weekends each year, we can afford to set aside at least one weekend for connecting us. We can share our grief, happiness, our achievements, our failures…... Trust me, we are definitely going to feel better that way. I have seen networking always helps in our profession and more so if you get to do that with your own clan and is good for your both mental & physical health…. I am sure you all know this is a scientifically evidence-based fact. Let’s join our hands, connect, learn from each other, and broaden our horizon to extend our collaborative works to Nepal.

With gratitude and warm regards,
Dr Mahesh Dhakal
President ANMDA (2023-2025)

Winter 2024

As we embrace the winter season across Australasia, I am delighted to share with you the latest updates and reflections on our journey. Our association has continued to thrive, making notable progress in several key areas.

Membership Milestone Approaching Three Digits: I am thrilled to share that our fee-paying membership in our organisation is now close to reaching to three digits. This growth is a testament to the value our association provides and the strength of our professional community. I would like to extend my warm welcome to all the new members of our association, who has recently joined or renewed their vow with us. I am even more excited to see that majority of new members are young and vibrant doctors who are just settling their foot in Australasian health care systems & very early in their careers. A larger, more diverse membership will enhance our association's strength, reach, and impact. This is what I was hoping to see as it is the young generation that needs to come forward in steering organisation like this and in fulfilling our organisational goal.

Membership drive / campaign: We are excited to announce a strategic initiative aimed at expanding our membership base, a campaign to reach out to Nepalese medical and dental professionals across Australasia. This includes contacting recent medical graduates, established practitioners, and academics who may benefit from our resources and network. I encourage each of you to continue supporting our membership drive and invite your colleagues to join us. Special membership packages and introductory offers for a limited time with nominal membership fee at $5 are available to all new members who are not employed but join us during this drive. We are also providing free participation to all ANMDA organised events to all such members incl their family members. New and existing members will enjoy enhanced benefits, including exclusive access to professional development resources, and opportunities for leadership roles within the association. A revamped mentorship program will connect new members with experienced mentors to support their career development too. Once we have our new website launched which can ease our current administrative difficulties in dealing with complex membership fee structures, we are actively thinking of discounted rates for CME programs / ANMDA events for all fee-paying members.

Educational Endeavours
The recent CME programme has been well-received, with record participation. The webinar on GLP1 Receptor agonists was subscribed really well and I was encouraged with record number of audience interaction in Q&A session. Another non-medical talk from one of our senior Chartered accountants from Vic was really appreciated which was quite insightful into filling our knowledge gaps in the field - various business models for pvt. practitioners– sole trader, company or trust, the areas where we as medical professionals can hardly be confident in various hidden but crucial issues underlying these complex areas.

New website for ANMDA
We are investing in technology to improve our communication platforms and make our resources more accessible. Our new website is on the verge of getting launched. We are also enhancing our online learning platform to offer a more interactive and user-friendly experience. We encourage members to ensure their logins for ANMDA portals are Up-to-date and membership fees are paid ideally 2 weeks prior to their expiry date so that you are not locked out from members’ exclusive content.

Upcoming Events
Our calendar for the remainder of this year is fully jam packed with various educational and networking opportunities. I encourage you all to participate and benefit from these offerings. Please kindly follow our website www.anmda.org.au / Facebook page for the details of the events. I strongly encourage all to reserve your place early which really helps us in organising such events with optimum use of resources/logistics.

Victoria has been selected as the most preferred state for our next AGM to be held in on 3rd weekend of Nov this year. It was decided unanimously in the last ex-com meeting. I would love to hear your ideas about how you want to shape this event as? Also do you feel this event be a full weekend (Friday PM till Sun PM), or just one day out of that weekend? Also provide your thoughts about what sort of programmes/ talks you would like to include in this event, – Do you want to see more of medical or non-medical but useful practical topics for our dayto- day life. Please provide your thoughts about your preference for social events too. Together with all your active participation / engagement, we can make this weekend a fun, memorable one plus very much effective for networking among all of us.

It's not only the AGM event but we would like to keep conducting various educational and useful talk programmes, webinars throughout the year as put out on the diary above. However, I would like to see all of our fraternities to engage and participate actively please! I wanted to clarify here that exec-committee is just for running of the organisation, you all are what matters most, and we would like to see you all actively engaged in steering of this organisation. Further, there is no hierarchy in our organisation, we all are one levelled platform in ANMDA. I would like to see medical professionals at all levels, may it be someone vey senior at the verge of retirement or be someone at the very start of their career, who is just trying to step into the health system here, to unite, bond / network with each other, work hand-in-hand in helping each other. Let’s show our true Nepali-ness and help us unite all of us scattered in this vast land of Australasia into one organisation so that we could help each other effectively.

As mentioned in my last letter, we were hoping to send out regular ANMDA newsletter every quarter. I would like to express my sincere apology in that we were not able to send one in Feb as the key person from our exec committee working for this newsletter had a family emergency back home in Nepal. Please bear with us and we will send out one soon.

We listened to our member’s frustrations in trying to navigate our website, registration for events and membership application. We realised that our current ANMDA website is not up to the scratch. We all thought that money spent in its improvement is money well spent which I am sure all of us would agree on that. We have recently been able to secure a contract with one brilliant web designing team from Kathmandu with excellent track record in their works. The team is already working in uplifting of our ANMDA website and pleased don’t be surprised if the team comes with a completely new look of the website. Please watch out for this space.

As promised, I will keep you updated on further developments in my future emails.
With gratitude and warm regards,
Dr Mahesh Dhakal
President ANMDA (2023-2025)

Summer 2023

I am deeply honored and humbled to address you as the newly elected president of our esteemed one and the only Nepalese medical professional organization in Australasia - ANMDA "Australasian Nepalese Medical and Dental Association". As I step into this role, I am filled with a sense of duty and excitement to serve all our Nepalese medical fraternities practicing medicine / dentistry across various health institutes across Australasia and also those eager to get enrolled into Australasian health systems.

First and foremost, I want to express my gratitude to each and every one of you for entrusting me with this responsibility. Your support and confidence inspire me to lead with vision, integrity, and dedication. I would like to sincerely thank the outgoing executive committee for their outstanding job esp. in increasing ANMDA membership plus an overall growth of ANMDA as an organisation. I am very glad to announce that with recent appointment of Dr Jyoti Baskota in the vacant position of NSW Coordinator, we now have a complete quorum in our new executive committee. For details re the new exe-com, please use this link anmda agm 2023 Elects New Committee - Australasian Nepalese Medical and Dental Association

Taking ANMDA forward

As we embark on this journey together, I am committed to upholding the values and principles that define our organization. Our mission is to bring all Nepalese doctors scattered across the vast land of Australasia into one umbrella of ANMDA, create an environment of mutual help, social networking, and collaboration. I envision a future where we continue to broaden ties among each other despite geographical vastness of the country, expand our platform and organisation as a whole so that we could confidently extend our helping hands to new coming doctors who aspire to pursue their career in Australian health system. By working together, we can make a meaningful difference in the lives of our patients and communities we serve. We are already in the process of collaboration with our sister organisations in the UK - www.ndauk.org for joint educational activities and also for possible collaborative works in Nepal.

To achieve our goals, collaboration and communication will be paramount. Talking about communication - I would like to sincerely apologise for the delay on my part for communicating with you since my election. In my defense, I should say I didn't have access to our group emails until recently. I would like to assure you that from now on I will be regularly updating you about our forthcoming activities, educational and social programmes, meetings etc which will also be uploaded in our website www.anmda.org.au. The website itself is going to get redesigned / restructured in coming months to make it more user friendly as well as with more educational contents uploaded esp. for the benefit of new coming Nepalese doctors in Australasia.

I have taken the liberty of sending you emails, following the tradition of what my predecessor had been doing. If for any reason, any of you feel this email is unsolicited/ undesired/unwanted, would like to apologise in advance for that. I would really appreciate if you could kindly let me know if that is your intention to unsubscribe and I will remove you from my mailing list.

Being part of ANMDA for the past 2-3 years I sensed that, among our members as well as among Nepalese medical fraternities in general, ANMDA did not seem to connect well, or be listened to well. I encourage each of you to actively engage in our organization's activities, share your ideas, and contribute your expertise.

Once we re-design our website, our subscribers would be able to post comments/suggestions/feedbacks. Your feedback, suggestions, and concerns are invaluable as we shape the future of our organization Also, we have decided to circulate regular ANMDA newsletter in emails every quarter for all our email subscribers. Our current general secretary will ensure that newsletters are compiled on time and circulated to all subscribers. I am committed to keeping you informed about our progress, challenges, and successes every step of the way.

As there seems to be some confusion among Nepalese community I diaspora about our organisation's structure, I just wanted to take this opportunity to clarify here that ANMDA is a "not for profit", "non-political" association. In fact, we have zero tolerance to politics in our organisation. ANMDA is composed of medical and dental professionals practicing and intending to practice in the Australasian region. And being a professional organisation, does not come under the umbrella of any community organisations like FeNCAA. As you all must be knowing that this organisation is propelled purely with voluntary hard work from all professionals who all have their own busy medical practice/jobs. I would like to sincerely thank all members in our executive committee who have dedicated their precious time in running this organisation.

I would like all members to encourage their fellow Nepalese doctors in their workplace/organisation to encourage to join ANMDA in our venture, spread the good word about our organisation and come to become part of us please. We already revised membership fees 2 years ago as $100 per two years for general membership and $5 per two years for associated membership (for non-practicing newcomer doctors). Those who are already members please kindly renew your membership every two years please. Also, Nepalese doctors who intend to come to Australasia to pursue career here, can become our associate member and take the advantage of all learning materials in our website and also get tangled in our regular online educational activities which will help them in getting acquainted with Australasian health system which in turn will help their chance of securing job in this country. Please just spread the good word to our homeland and keep visiting our website to learn about our forthcoming activities. We are in fact in the process of creating a calendar for the whole year and post it on our website soon.

In closing, I am honoured to serve as your president and look forward to the journey ahead. As promised, I will keep you updated on further developments in my future emails.

With gratitude and warm regards,
Dr Mahesh Dhakal
